The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas were not afraid to go to Vārāṇasī, although there were indeed many Māyāvādīs there. Vārāṇasī was known as a center of Māyāvādī sannyāsīs, who often criticized and offended Vaiṣṇavas and the path of bhakti. The Māyāvādī sannyāsīs of Vārāṇasī, for instance, condemned Lord Caitanya for taking part in saṅkīrtana, holding that a sannyāsī should not engage in such activity. [1, pp. 465][2, pp. 33][3, pp. 335][4, pp. 17][5, pp. 87][6, pp. 121]
Despite this, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His devotees visited Vārāṇasī and preached there. Lord Caitanya even met the Māyāvādī leader Prakāśānanda Sarasvatī and his disciples, and in the end many of them became devotees. [2, pp. 33][7, pp. 385]
Thus, although Vārāṇasī held many Māyāvādīs, the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas did not avoid the place and continued their mission of preaching and spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
